About Us

Core Stability Physio began in 2013

Katherine combined her experience and knowledge of physiotherapy and group exercise to create a business that specialises in small group exercise classes run by physiotherapists. Our experienced physios all have specialised knowledge of exercise, including during and after pregnancy.

Katherine is proud to say that Core Stability Physio provides a service that is personal, professional, encouraging, welcoming, educational and supportive.

Meet Our Physiotherapists

Katherine Edmonds

Since graduating in 2002 from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) Katherine has worked as a physiotherapist. She completed the postgraduate Specialist Certificate in Physiotherapy (Exercise for Women) at the University of Melbourne in 2007. Katherine has worked mainly in private practice and has extensive experience running many types of exercise classes since 2003.

Katherine is one of the General Physiotherapists at Pelvic Strength Physiotherapy in Croydon where many Core Stability Physio group classes are held each week. Katherine’s special interests include physiotherapy treatment of musculoskeletal conditions (particularly those involving the spine and pelvis) and exercise rehabilitation, especially in the area of Women’s Health. She enjoys a hands-on approach to her treatment using techniques such as joint mobilisation, massage and dry needling. When she is not working Katherine enjoys going to the gym, swimming and spending time with her husband and three primary-school aged children.

Alex Barnes

Alex graduated from Coventry University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Physiotherapy. She then worked for the NHS in England for 5 years before moving to Australia in 2007. Alex has worked in a variety of hospitals across Melbourne gaining extensive experience in Orthopaedic rehabilitation. She also has a great deal of experience treating lower back pain and chronic pain. Alex has a keen interest in hip and pelvic problems and is keen to further this interest with some postgraduate study in Women’s Health once she has finished having babies!

Since moving to Australia, Alex has developed a passion for the use of Pilates exercises in the treatment of many conditions. She completed a Certificate in Pilates Rehabilitation (Polestar) in 2011. Alex strongly encourages the use of Pilates exercises during and after pregnancy to return mothers to fitness and also to prevent back and pelvic problems.

Outside of physiotherapy, Alex's interests include the gym, movies, music and baking!

Christine Bowman

Christine graduated from LaTrobe University in 2005 and since then has worked in a variety of settings including private practice, sports teams, rehabilitation and chronic pain. Christine also currently works at Maroondah Hospital.

Christine completed her DMA Clinical Pilates in 2007 and since then has used exercise as the cornerstone of her physiotherapy treatments.

Christine has 3 children and understands how difficult it can be for mothers to escape the demands of family life to look after their own health. She is passionate about promoting exercise for women, and the role Pilates can play in allowing for safe return to exercise for those post pregnancy or injury, within a supportive environment.

Karen Fernandes

Karen graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from Monash University in 2011 and commenced working at The Victorian Rehabilitation Centre gaining experience in trauma, neurological, cardiac and orthopaedic rehabilitation before taking a permanent position in the persistent pain management team in 2013. After having her first child in 2018, Karen has taken a keen interest in helping women strengthen their bodies pre- and postnatally through education and exercise at Core Stability Physio.  Karen has a keen eye for correcting posture and encourages body awareness in everyday activities.

Other professional interests include vestibular retraining, aquatic physiotherapy and clinical supervision. Karen is also a qualified Lymphoedema Therapist (Level 1).
